SOCIAL INTER(IOR)ACTIONS

SRIPPING BACK

The fifth level of Duncan and Jordanstone College of Art and Design has become outdated and uninspiring to students. The project is to re-design a new vibrant and exciting space. By observing the space on level 5, gives a real sense of how the space is currently used.

Inspiration was taken from the large brutalist concrete structure as well as materials that a student would encounter on a day to day basis without noticing.

The Dutch architecture firm OMA has been influential, with restoring the historic Fodaco dei Tedeschiin in Venice. The 19thcentury pavilion has been through many restorations due to fires and other alterations. You can see its past in the current space as well as new exciting materials that create a modern twist to the building.

“Stripping back” is a space for students to feel welcome, a social space for gatherings and events as well as somewhere to chill with friends. It’s important that the students still feel connected to the art school through the new spatial layout. With taking inspiration from the word ‘Palimpsest’, the design has altered/ reused current design elements to create a vibrant and exciting space. By stripping back, the old roof tiles, the concrete coffers that had been hidden behind are now exposed and create a more bare and open feel to the space. This just shows that raw and existing materials don’t need to covered up with cheap and office like interior.
